“Organic Abstraction” – 2006

Artist:

Ibrahim Nubani

Description:

The exhibition “Organic Abstraction,” work by internationally-renowned Galilee artist Ibrahim Nubani, represented two distinctive styles of the artist attesting to his mastery of the relationship between composition and color. In the first, his use of primary colors and geometric abstractions are suspended on the canvas, as if liberated from the traditional Islamic geometric design. The second style is marked by broad strokes of bright colors and more organic shapes, inspired by nature and imbued with symbolism. His paintings are emotional, linked to his life as a refugee in his own country, and to the contradiction between a free society and Zionist exclusionist apartheid ideology which denies Palestinian human rights. The latter is clearly reflected in his monumental work The Sun.  His signature symbol the sunflower is dismembered, and rendered in dark colors, the bright blue sky filled with markings and anthropomorphic figures spread over the canvas almost bursting out at the edges.
