“Apparitions” – May 2006

Artist:

Jawad al-Malhi

Curator:

Salwa Mikdadi

Description:

Apparitions, a solo exhibition for artist Jawad Malhi, consisted of two large installations: Going Nowhere and Hanging Shadows, and included figurative and abstract paintings in acrylic on canvas and other mixed-media, dating back to the late 1980’s. Malhi, whose family was displaced from al-Malha, a Palestinian village southwest of Jerusalem, and who lives and works in Shu’fat refugee camp in Jerusalem, bases his art work on his daily observations of life in Shu’fat refugee camp. He began painting and sculpting at a young age and had his first art exhibition at the age of seventeen.  He works in a variety of media from sheet metal to oils, wax, natural materials, resin, and acrylic. Al-Malhi’s philosophical exploration of self and identity clearly demonstrates his talent as a keen observer of the universal human condition.
